The creative influence of Dakota by Design is CTDA master designer tailor, Anita Kealey. As a teenager, she learned the importance of hand sewing while working in her motherís workroom. As a young student, she developed her tailoring skills while competing in the National Make it Yourself with Wool contest sponsored by wool mills such as Pendleton. After winning trips to compete with awards of fine wool, sewing equipment as well as the top prize; a Bernina Sewing machine which she still uses 30+ years later. Studied Fashion Design at Parsonís School of Design and continues fine tuning her education in master tailoring.

A multi-disciplined designer widely recognized for her innovative use of sustainable textiles in fashion design and contract interior design. Her collections are influenced by her love of mid-century architecture and clean lines. Ms. Kealeyís passion for the environment and awareness of sustainability is apparent in her eco-sustainable one of kind collections featuring contrasts of uncommon materials with simple lines and traditional shapes.

Often these wearable art forms and accessories are constructed of repurposed materials; including woven obsolete media tape, buttons cut from deer antlers and South Dakota grown sheep wool are among the textiles and accessories used in Dakota by Design creations.

A fashion historian and preservationist, Ms. Kealey serves as the creative director for the fashion and interior design studies of the Institute of Design & Technology of SD. She is a frequent guest and spokesperson for sustainability in fashion and has been a guest on Martha Stewart sharing her historic collections and inspirations. As an entrepreneur, her vision, and creative development of creative mentorship & apprenticeship programs at IDTSD; was awarded with a Governorís Giant Vision Award from South Dakota Department of Economic Development in 2010 and a finalist in 2015 Governorís Giant Vision Award with the development Dakota by Design shirt.
